The Saver Spot

One roundup a week. Written on Sunday night, posted Monday.

This week

08/24/2026

Worth it: store-brand canned tomatoes at 79¢ the 28oz can, bone-in chicken thighs at $1.39/lb, and the 5lb bag of yellow onions for $2.49, which is the lowest I have logged since March.
Skipped: the “10 for $10” pasta sauce. My price book says $1.00 a jar has been the ordinary shelf price twice this year, so the endcap was selling me the number, not a discount.

Full write-up, including the freezer maths on the chicken: the roundup for 08/24/2026.

Earlier weeks

  • 08/17/2026 — back-to-school stationery is genuinely cheap this fortnight; the lunchbox “value packs” are not.
  • 08/10/2026 — peak sweetcorn, and a butter price that finally came back down.
  • 08/03/2026 — the month I gave up on the loyalty app and what it cost me.
  • 07/27/2026 — canning jars, and why I buy lids in July rather than September.

If you are new here

Start with how I pick, which explains what a price book is and why I will not tell you a percentage off is a good deal. The price book itself is the numbers I check against. Everything older is in the archive.

Who writes this

Renata. I shop for two adults and a teenager, mostly at one regional chain and a discount grocer four miles apart.

I have kept a price book since 2019. That is the only reason any of this is useful.

Standing rule

If I would not have bought it at full price within the month, a discount on it is not a saving. Most of what I skip each week fails that one test.
